EIGHTEEN

The failed November Uprising left behind irreversible destruction: the Kingdom of Poland’s parliament was finally eliminated and its administration entirely purged; its institutions were abolished, including its bank; its system of currency disappeared, along with its weights and its measurements.

With no negotiated surrender, Tsar Nicholas I had a free hand in dealing with what he considered Polish rebels. Hundreds of them were executed on the spot. Some 180,000 were deported, while others were sent to Siberia and forced to labor in the mines, often for life. The most lenient punishment was compulsory service in the ranks of the Russian army lasting twenty-five years.

Prince Adam Jerzy had sacrificed more than half of his personal fortune to salvage Poland’s connection with the Russian Empire. Unwilling to leave it at that, Tsar Nicholas appointed a special criminal tribunal that found him guilty in absentia of treason. Due to the princely rank of the family, his punishment—death by beheading—was reduced to permanent banishment, and he was executed in effigy.
